A new production of The Wiz opens this summer at Birmingham's Alexandra Theatre before moving across to the Leeds Quarry Theatre.
This Birmingham Repertory Theatre, West Yorkshire Playhouse production is an innovative approach to staging a large scale musical using local talent to provide much of the ensemble to support a professional cast and production and technical team. It is probably fair to say that this is the first time that this musical has had a professional production in the UK since the original opened in 1984.This production will be Directed by Josette Bushell Mingo, with Choreography by Paul J. Medford.
We at Overtures thought that this would be an ideal opportunity to look back at the history of The Wiz and maybe whet your appetite for the treat that is to be served up this summer. The show opens on Friday 10th June and runs until the 18th June in Birmingham and then opens in Leeds on 24th June and runs until 16th July. As you may gather from the show's illustration this all black soul musical features silver slippers rather than the more traditional ruby ones. Watch this short video taken from auditions...recognise the pianist?...it's George Dyer, one of the musicial directors for the show.
